How to Choose the Right Powder for a Shot
Product selection is the first blasting decision and the most expensive one to get wrong. The choice comes down to four questions: how wet, how hard, how big a hole, and what does a broken ton actually cost. Here's how the decision runs on a real bench. 01Start with water — it decides half the answer
ANFO (ammonium nitrate + fuel oil) is the cheapest energy in mining, but it dissolves in water and dies. Dry holes: ANFO wins. Damp holes: consider dewatering plus liners, or move up. Standing water: emulsion or watergel, full stop. Sleep time in wet ground pushes the same direction — emulsions hold up overnight; wet ANFO doesn't.
02Match energy to the rock
Soft, well-jointed rock breaks fine on ANFO's gas-heavy energy. Hard, massive rock (granite, trap rock, tight dolomite) wants the higher detonation velocity and brisance of emulsions or heavy-ANFO blends to shatter rather than heave. If the muckpile keeps coming up blocky in hard ground, the powder may be the problem before the pattern is.
03Respect the hole diameter
Every product has a critical diameter below which it won't reliably detonate. Bulk ANFO gets unhappy in small holes; packaged products and small-diameter emulsions exist for a reason. In big production holes (6½"+), bulk blends deliver the cheapest reliable energy; in 3" trim holes, packaged emulsion earns its price.
04Blend to the bench with heavy ANFO
Most quarries land on emulsion/ANFO blends (30/70, 50/50, 70/30) because a blend truck lets you tune water resistance and energy hole-by-hole: wetter bottoms get richer blend, dry tops get cheaper ANFO. You're not buying a product — you're buying a dial.
05Price it per broken ton, not per pound
Emulsion costs more per pound and sometimes less per ton broken, because better fragmentation cuts crusher power, bridging, and secondary breakage downstream. Run the whole chain: drill + blast + load + haul + crush. The cheapest powder that leaves boulders is the most expensive powder on the property.
06Confirm the system, not just the product
Product choice includes the initiation system (electronic vs. non-electric), primers matched to the column, and stemming that actually confines. A premium emulsion with lazy stemming is a very expensive noise-maker.
