How to Pass the PE Mining Exam

The PE Mining and Mineral Processing exam is beatable with a plan: it rewards fast fundamentals and unit discipline far more than deep specialty knowledge. Here's a preparation system built around how the exam actually fails people — written by someone in the fight.

01Know the battlefield

Computer-based, NCEES-administered, roughly 8 hours and 85 questions spanning surface and underground mining, drilling and blasting, materials handling, mineral processing, ventilation, ground control, mine economics, and safety/MSHA. 02Live inside the reference handbook

The exam is closed-book except the searchable NCEES reference handbook on screen. Your single biggest edge: knowing where every formula lives before exam day. Study with the PDF open; every practice problem should include the 10 seconds of finding the equation in the handbook, because that lookup speed is worth more points than memorization.

03Drill answer-first, error-tagged

Work problems cold, commit to an answer, then check. When wrong, don't just read the solution — name the error type: unit slip, wrong formula, algebra, concept. Keep a running error log. After 50 problems the log tells you your personal failure modes with embarrassing clarity, and fixing those is worth 10 points.

04Master the universal five

A disproportionate share of the exam runs through five tools: unit conversions done ruthlessly, NPV/annuity factors, the Bond equation, Q=VA in its many disguises (ventilation, conveyors, pumps), and B×S×H÷27 pattern math. Make these automatic and a third of the exam becomes clerical.

05Schedule 8–12 weeks, 150+ hours

Weeks 1–2: diagnostic + handbook tour. Weeks 3–8: two topic areas per week, 25+ problems each, error log running. Weeks 9–10: mixed timed sets at exam pace (~5.5 min/question). Final two weeks: one full timed simulation, then drill only your error log and the MSHA numbers (Part 46/48 hours, incidence-rate constant, ventilation minimums).

06Play exam-day triage

Three passes: solve the fast ones, flag the slow ones, guess the brutal ones last — an unanswered question is the only guaranteed zero. Watch the four recurring traps: short tons vs. metric, the unconverted-units answer choice, tax before the depreciation shield in economics problems, and Part 46 vs. Part 48 training hours.

The TrapStudying what you like. Mine planners drill economics they already know and skip flotation; mill people do the opposite. The exam is weighted, and the specification is public — your hours should mirror it, not your résumé.
Rule of ThumbThe exam tests speed on fundamentals, not depth on specialties. If you can find the formula in 15 seconds and keep the units honest, you pass.
